What is Osteopathy?

Osteopaths are primary health care practitioners who recognise the important link between the structure of the body and the way it functions. Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine which facilitates healing by focusing on how the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs function as a holistic unit.

Using skilled evaluation, diagnosis and a wide range of hands-on techniques, osteopaths can identify important types of dysfunction in your body. Osteopathic treatment uses techniques such as stretching and massage for general treatment of the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) along with mobilisation and manipulation of specific joints and soft tissues using direct or indirect techniques.

What can Osteopathy help you with:

• Headache/migraine
• Low back pain and sciatica
• Neck, arm, shoulder and wrist pain
• Hip, leg, knee and ankle pain
• Tingling and numbness in hands or feet

What happens during the consultation with the Osteopath?

The Osteopath will discuss with you the problem you have and will ask questions about your general health and lifestyle. The Osteopath will ask you details of any injuries you may have had, will want to know if you have had any investigation on those injuries, and also what other treatments you may have received. If you are on any medication, please let the osteopath know about it.

The osteopath will use their hands to test the way your bones, muscles and body moves to find the area that needs to be treated. Sometimes it may be necessary to remove some of your outer clothes so a clearer view of the body can be obtained. They will tell you what they have found and outline how they could treat you, what the outcome should be, and how you may feel as the treatment progresses. They will carry out the treatment that has been agreed on. You may be advised on any things you could do to prevent the condition returning.
